“I set fire to the rain, watched it pour as I touched your face.”

These cryptic lyrics were intentional, weren’t they? It’s impossible to set the rain on fire. But the ambiguity in her metaphor allowed me to find my own way to make sense of the song.

See, once upon a time in my life, you were the rain. You gave life to the emptiness that had haunted me for so long. I was a wandering soul with no genuine happiness. I was consumed by the darkness, letting misery take control of me. You changed that. You gave color to my wasteland of a life. You were the rain that liberated me from a dark period of time.

All tales must come to an end, and unfortunately, that includes the chapter that you and I shared. You saved me from it all, but you changed into something. A being with no heart. You became the very source of pain that you once saved me from.

I tried to part with your memory. I tried to leave my feelings for you behind, but it couldn’t be done. You lingered in every frame of my dreams. You haunted my nightmares. Images of you flashed in my daydreams.

I can’t get over you. Doing so would be impossible.

After all, you can’t set fire to the rain.
