This will be the death of an art form that we’ve all fallen in love with. This is a mistake.
It may just be an opinion, but I am strongly against these digital book readers. Kindle, iBook, all that shit… It’s a shame, because we truly are giving up beauty and trading it in for convenience. For me, it won’t be the same, because we all know where this move is headed. In the future, there will be no more books printed. Instead, everything will be digitized, and reading will never be the same again. It can be argued that this is saving the environment, but books were never the main culprit in the first place.
For me, it just won’t replace the smell of new books. Hell, even old books have a special scent that just brings back memories to when they were new. Bringing back the emotions you’ve felt when you first flipped through its pages. Taking you back to the excitement you’ve felt when you first purchased the books, and couldn’t wait to transport yourself into a new world. Swiping the screen and having a new page appear isn’t the same as flipping it with your own hands. Turning on a switch will never be the same as opening the front cover and picking up where you belong. It just doesn’t feel right to me.
I can’t imagine a world where there are no books. Will libraries, then, become obsolete as well? If authors only published their works online, it’s like dimnishing its worth… It can be deleted just like that. It can’t be given away, or gifted. It can’t be handed down. The book won’t have a history, and that’s the sad part. It just won’t be the same.
